Semaglutide, is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist used in conjunction with a reduced-calorie diet and exercise to promote sustainable weight loss. It has demonstrated more potent effects compared to other medications in its class, potentially due to its higher dosage.

By binding to brain receptors that regulate hunger and appetite, Semaglutide alters food preferences and reduces calorie consumption. Its mechanism of action involves delaying stomach emptying and slowing intestinal motility, leading to prolonged satiety. Additionally, GLP-1 agonists stimulate insulin secretion and decrease glucagon release, resulting in lower blood glucose levels.

These treatments require an assessment of your medical history and lab work by a DOConsultations medical provider.

Mechanism of Action: Semaglutide is a synthetic glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist that belongs to a class of drugs called incretin mimetics. Incretins are a type of hormone that stimulate a decrease in blood glucose levels, such as GLP-1 that binds to and activates the GLP-1 receptor. GLP-1 works to regulate ones appetite and caloric intake, and the GLP-1 receptor is present in several areas of your body, including areas in your brain responsible for appetite regulation. Semaglutide, as an agonist, binds to the GLP-1 receptor and works to lower blood glucose by stimulating insulin secretion and to inhibit glucagon release.

Tirzepatide, is a GLP-1 drug that is taken once-weekly as an injectable to promote weight loss by regulating blood sugars and reducing hemoglobin A1C levels. Tirzepatide works similarly to the other drugs in the GLP-1 family, but it contains an extra molecule that may give it a slight edge.

The medication has a dual-action design, mimicking the action of two unique incretin hormones involved in blood sugar control: glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP). This unique dual action makes it the first-in-class medication that acts on both of these receptors.

GIP is a hormone that may complement the effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists. In preclinical models, GIP has been shown to decrease food intake and increase energy expenditure, therefore resulting in weight reductions. When combined with the GLP-1 receptor agonist, GIP usage may have a greater impact on markers of metabolic dysregulation, such as body weight, glucose and lipids.

On average, patients lose up to 22.5% of their body weight on this program.

Important medical disclaimers

Mechanism of Action: Tirzepatide is both a glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist. It selectively binds to and activates the GIP and GLP-1 receptors, the targets for native GIP and GLP-1 hormones. GIP and GIP-1 are hormones that are primarily released from the body’s small intestine that enhances the release of insulin following the consumption of food. Both of these hormones are known as incretins, with tirzepatide belonging to a class of drugs known as incretin mimetics. Tirzepatide works by directly activating GIP and GLP-1 pathways to help regulate blood sugar.
